Saraswati Vihar literally means Saraswati's abode. This residential neighbourhood was created as a group housing society of school teachers in the 1970s. Teachers are repository of knowledge and sources of learning. Hence the name.
Delhi Development Authority acquired agricultural land of Naharpur, Sultanpuri, Mangolpur Kalan, Mangolpur Khurd and Pitampura villages in the 1960s and allotted some of the land to the government teachers' group housing society. The land was far away from Delhi city as it existed then and initially resembled a jungle with trees and uncultivated fields. Development of the area started after 1975.
